A poinsettia during the winterholidays always looks very cozy. Many people try to keep the poinsettia beautiful after the holidays so they don’t have to buy a new one the following year. Although this is not so difficult, most poinsettias still die in the spring. With the tips below you can put the poinsettia back on Christmas the following year.

When the poinsettia has finished flowering, leave it alone for a while. Prune it short in the spring and cover the cuts with cigar ash. If it is warm outside, you can put the poinsettia in a larger pot and put it in the garden. When the weather starts to get colder, bring the poinsettia back in and keep it moist.

Poinsettia in a vase

You can also place the poinsettia beautifully in a vase. Cut a nice branch for this. Put the bottom 5 centimeters of the stem in boiling water or in a flame. The milk juice from the stem then solidifies into a kind of cork. Then cut the bottom 2 centimeters diagonally through the ‘cork’. You can now put the poinsettia flower in a vase.

Tips for keeping the poinsettia looking good for a long time:

  • Make sure the room is moderately warm (preferably between 15 and 18 degrees).
  • Avoid large temperature fluctuations.
  • Place the poinsettia in the winter as much as possible. light, but avoid direct sunlight.
  • The poinsettia can give you a good splash of lukewarm warm water. However, make sure that the potting soil is dry to the touch. If it has a soggy root ball for a few days, the leaves will wilt and fall off.
  • Spray the flowers occasionally. If the room has too dry air, the leaf edges will turn yellow or brown.

Fact: Sometimes the poinsettia suddenly loses its leaves without them wilting. This often indicates that the room is too cold or that the plant has been in a draft.
